Let’s go! 306 steps up the Alter Peter church

The Church of St. Peter is a part of Munich in the same way as Weißwurst sausages and FC Bayern Munich. The church has stood in Marienplatz square, the heart of the Bavarian capital, since 1294. This makes it the oldest parish church in Munich and a symbol of the city. At one point it was even the tallest building in the city thanks to its tower, which is 91 metres tall and affectionately called “Alter Peter” (old Peter) by residents. The church has not been the tallest building in the city for a long time, but it still has the best lookout point. The lookout point (which is 56 metres high) offers a wonderful panoramic view over the old town and the hustle and bustle of Munich, and on good days you can even see as far as 100 kilometres, all the way to the Alps. The only catch is that you’ll need to climb the 306 steps up first. If you take this on, you’ll be able to see bells through a window as they ring once you reach the belfry.

Arrival: from Munich main station, you can take the S-Bahn lines S1, S2, S3, S4, S6, S7 or S8 and get off at the “Marienplatz” stop (two stops away). From there it is a two-minute walk. Simply turn right on Rindermarkt street. After about 40 metres you will see Petersplatz square on the left, where the Church of St. Peter is located. The Church of St. Peter is also only a 20 minutes’ walk away from Munich main station. Walk east along Bayerstraße until you reach Karlsplatz (Stachus) square. Cross the square and walk along the pedestrian zone in Kaufingerstraße for 750 metres and turn right at Rindermarkt street.
