Surfing experience in the centre of Munich: The Eisbach wave in the English Garden

The Eisbach and the English Garden - Munich's green oasis

The Eisbach is an approximately 2 km long stream that flows through the centre of the English Garden. Its name means "ice-cold stream" and describes the crystal-clear, cold water that provides cooling on hot summer days. The English Garden itself is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world and offers you numerous highlights: wide meadows, idyllic paths, beer gardens such as the Chinese Tower and cultural attractions. The Eisbach combines nature and action and is a favourite destination for Munich residents and visitors alike.

Action and relaxation at the Eisbach wave

Right next to the Haus der Kunst, you can watch surfers show off their skills on the standing wave. Whether summer or winter, professionals from all over the world meet here and impress with spectacular tricks. You can simply watch, enjoy the atmosphere and maybe even take a few cool photos.

Free of charge and open around the clock

Visiting the Eisbachwelle is free and possible at any time. The surrounding area offers you the perfect mix of action and relaxation. Grab an ice cream or a coffee at the nearby "Fräulein Grüneis" kiosk and watch the surfers relax. Especially in summer, the English Garden invites you to take a walk or have a picnic.

A spot for families and photo fans

The Eisbach wave is not only exciting for surfers. If you are travelling with family or friends, it offers a special experience. It is also a brilliant photo spot: great shots are taken especially at sunset or on cooler days when fog rises over the water.

How to find the Eisbachwelle

The wave is located directly on Prinzregentenstraße, next to the Haus der Kunst. The bus stop "Nationalmuseum/Haus der Kunst" is just around the corner. From there, it's just a few steps to the small bridge, which offers the best view of the wave.

Try it for yourself: Surfing for beginners

The wave is not for beginners - it is really challenging due to the strong current and shallow water depth. You should already have a lot of experience here. If you're not that experienced, it's worth visiting the rafting area in Thalkirchen. The conditions there are less challenging and you can make your first attempts in a relaxed environment.
