The Franz Marc Museum in Kochel
The town of Kochel has built the museum of the same name in honour of the famous expressionist painter Franz Marc. Here you can marvel at exhibits by the artist and other important works of art from the 20th century on 700 square metres.
Franz Marc is one of the most famous German expressionists and - together with Wassily Kandinsky as co-founder of the "Blaue Reiter" movement - one of the most important pioneers of modern art in the 20th century. In Kochel, an entire museum is dedicated to Franz Marc, his work and his life, as he created the majority of his oeuvre in this landscape.
Special architecture and collection of the Franz Marc Museum
The architecture of the museum, which was built in 1986, already refers to Franz Marc's landscape-inspired art through its embedding in nature, the large windows with a view of the surroundings and the open design. In addition to numerous paintings by the artist, you can also discover woodcuts and written documents here - and thus the entire spectrum of his artistic work. His primary aim was always to break through the barriers of detailed imitation of nature and to emphasise the true essence through abstraction.
Expansion and contextualisation of the exhibition space
In order to embed Franz Marc's works comprehensively in the artistic context of the 20th century, the exhibition space was expanded to a total of 700 square metres in 2008. The Etta and Otto Stangl Foundation Collection is a particular gain. For the first time, it is now possible to place Franz Marc's works in direct dialogue with those of other influential contemporaries and companions such as Paul Klee, Wassily Kandinsky and members of the "Brücke" group of artists.
A unique look at the art of the 20th century
Unlike in traditional museums, at the Franz Marc Museum you will not experience a chronologically linear development of the artistic work of Franz Marc or his contemporaries. Instead, well thought-out and regularly changing hangings provide new perspectives on the art of the 20th century. These changing juxtapositions create completely new perspectives, leitmotifs and a deeper understanding of the life and work of Franz Marc and his companions.
Special and temporary exhibitions for every taste
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Franz Marc Museum regularly organises special and temporary exhibitions. Various artists, some of them world-famous, from the Expressionist and Classical Modernist periods are presented at regular intervals - constantly opening up new perspectives on Franz Marc's creative work.
Art tours and workshops for art lovers
If you would like to find out more about the artists and their works, you should definitely take part in a guided tour - the museum also organises regular courses and workshops for art enthusiasts. You should definitely try out the Sunday "Open Studio". Here, both children and adults can give free rein to their creativity with painting, handicrafts and artwork.
Relaxation and culture: yoga in the museum
A special highlight is the relaxing yoga class with a panoramic view of the Alps and the lake. Twice a month, the Franz Marc Museum offers this regenerative relaxation technique under professional guidance - the perfect way to set the mood for the subsequent museum visit.
Current events and exhibitions, further information, admission prices and opening times can be found directly on the museum's website .
Culinary breaks in the café and restaurant
For a little break in between, it's worth making a detour to the museum's own café. Here you can relax on the sun terrace with a coffee and delicious cake and let the art impressions you have gathered sink in. If you're feeling peckish, the menu offers a varied selection of delicacies.
Stop for a bite to eat with fine cuisine and panoramic views
At the end of the day, you shouldn't miss a trip to the Kochler Stuben. The restaurant is located just 15 minutes from the museum and Kochel railway station, not far from Lake Kochel. Bavarian-French specialities await you here in a sophisticated ambience. In summer, you can enjoy the mountain panorama from the terrace - the perfect end to a cultural excursion.
