Flowers and trees are in bloom, the grass shines lush green and sunrays tickle the face. When nature awakens in spring, we are drawn to get outside into the fresh air as often as possible. Whether in Upper Bavaria or Franconia, our five suggestions for beautiful spring hikes all offer impressive natural highlights, inspiring views and plenty of variety - whether for families, friends, as a couple or alone.
Maisinger Gorge: Hiking in the footsteps of the ice age
Southwest of the Upper Bavarian town of Starnberg, the last Ice Age carved the Maisinger Gorge into the landscape. The leisurely spring hike Maisinger Schlucht leads along extensive flowering meadows, through mixed forests and meanders along the Maisinger Bach stream. For those who want to explore the beautiful Five Lakes Region in spring, this family-friendly route is a must. Our tip for warm spring days: Be sure to pack a towel, because the Maisinger Bach is made for a little cooling off in between.
Hiking in spring: dreamlike panoramic view from the Dillberg
The Franconian Dillberg is the ideal destination for a day trip with high-altitude air and spring sunshine. The border mountain between the Upper Palatinate and Middle Franconia is located in the Nuremberg region and, at just under 600 meters, is the highest of the Neumarkt witness mountains. Hikers are rewarded up there with a magnificent panorama. In good visibility conditions, the view extends over Middle Franconia to the Upper Palatinate Jura landscape.
The Altherrenweg: a hiking experience for young and old.
Contrary to what the name suggests, this spring hiking route actually delights every age group. Magnificent flower meadows, where bees and butterflies dance in the spring months, are just as much a part of this varied tour as the magnificent view of the Ammergau Alps. Along the way, benches invite you to take a break. Here you can enjoy the silence in spring-like temperatures - the breathtaking mountain panorama always in view. Lovingly designed wooden sculptures such as Ulf, the giant dwarf, delight both young and old excursionists.
The Altmühltal Panorama Trail: Hiking Happiness in Middle Franconia
The 200-kilometer route through the Altmühltal Nature Park is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Germany. Particularly popular for a spring hike: the 7.5-kilometer section from Treuchtlingen to the castle town of Pappenheim. The route offers a perfect mix of nature enjoyment and Middle Franconian town flair. Old trees, juniper slopes and rugged rocky landscapes make for an outdoor experience of a special kind in spring.
Steeped in history: the circular hike around the Alte Veste castle.
During the Thirty Years' War, Alte Veste Castle near Fürth was the focus of the battle of the same name. Today, day trippers can take a historical spring hike here in the footsteps of Wallenstein. The castle's observation tower offers a unique panoramic view of Franconia. An elaborately designed adventure playground awaits young hikers along the way.
