The Ammergau Alps: hiking in Bavaria’s largest nature reserve
The hour-long hike takes you along the Schutzengelweg culture trail all the way up to Rohrkopfhütte cabin. A panoramic terrace with a gorgeous view of two majestic castles awaits you there.
The Tegelberg mountain is located in Ostallgäu and is part of the 227-square-kilometre nature reserve in the Ammergau Alps. You can discover attractions such as Ettal Abbey, the Pilgrimage Church of Wies, Neuschwanstein castle, and Hohenschwangau castle there. A breathtaking view of both castles and a delicious snack of Allgäuer Wurstsalat (sausage salad – about EUR 8) or Kässpatzen (traditional German noodles with cheese – about EUR 10) can be enjoyed at the Rohrkopfhütte cabin. The trip begins at the valley station of the Tegelbergbahn cable car. From there the Schutzengelweg culture trail will take you first through a wooded area and past alpine meadows, until you reach a lookout point that offers a view of the Alpine foothills. Display boards along the path inform hikers about the region’s history, royal families and Roman influence. You will reach Rohrkopfhütte cabin after an hour of hiking.
