Even the fringe of the Alps was solidly under Roman control. The expansive Villa Rustica estate was discovered in the shadow of the Tegelberg mountain in the 1930s. The well-maintained frescos and the sophisticated heating system alone make the site worth a visit. If you’re travelling with someone who is not a huge culture vulture, they can come along and enjoy the summer toboggan run next door instead. Afterwards you can hop on the Tegelbergbahn cable car and enjoy the view. By the way: you receive a discount if you present your train ticket.
