In the Ammergau Alps, there are many wonderful hiking trails to discover, especially in winter. In Bad Kohlgrub, guests can trudge through the Ammer Mountains on snowshoes and be enchanted by the sight of the winter mountain world.
If you don't have the necessary equipment yourself, you can hire snowshoes and poles from the ski hire station. It is located just above the Hörnlebahn valley station, at the starting point of the snowshoe hike.
Have you got everything? Then you're ready to go. The 7.9-kilometre route is well-maintained and easy to master, even for beginners.
Snow hike in front of an impressive Alpine panorama
The trail leads from the valley station along the ski piste through a small wooded area. Thanks to the snowshoes, you almost float over the soft powder snow. The trail then continues uphill along the left-hand side of the piste: past the mountain rescue service and the Hörnle hut, the high-altitude trail leads to the first summit, the Vorderer Hörnle. Then it goes downhill again for a short distance - before the ascent begins again. Another short stretch and you are already on the second summit, the Hinteres Hörnle. After a short rest and a souvenir photo in front of the picturesque Alpine backdrop, you return along the same route until you reach the Hörnle Hütte right next to the mountain station. A sun terrace with panoramic views and delicious and inexpensive Bavarian specialities await you at the Hörnle Hütte. Afterwards, the cable car will take you directly down to the valley - or you can choose the same route for the descent. Please check in advance whether the cable car is in operation!

A wide range of winter activities
Bad Kohlgrub offers so much more for all winter sports enthusiasts: in addition to skiing or snowboarding in the small but beautiful Hörnle ski area, ski touring is a particularly popular pastime. And tobogganists also get their money's worth - the Hörnle chairlift takes you up in comfort and toboggans can be hired on site for a fee.
Beautiful bike tours in summer
By the way: In summer, when the snow has melted and the snowshoes have been put back on the shelves, Bad Kohlgrub is also a great place to go on bike tours. The famous Ettal Monastery, for example, is only 15 kilometres away. In addition to its internationally renowned baroque-style basilica and rococo sacristy, the monastery has one of the oldest and most beautiful monastery gardens in the region. Or how about a detour to Neuschwanstein Castle? King Ludwig II's fairytale castle is only around 35 kilometres away - an ideal route for e-bikes. You can hire a suitable bike directly on site at the spa and tourist information centre in Bad Kohlgrub.
How to get there
Take the train to Bad Kohlgrub station. From there, it's a 20-minute walk to the Tannenbankerl lift, the starting point of the snowshoe hike. From the station, walk west along the Bahnhofstrain until you reach the main road and turn right. After approx. 400 m, turn left onto Sankt-Martin-Straße and stay on this road until Trillerweg leads off to the left. After approx. 200 m, keep left and after approx. 400 m turn left onto Fallerstraße. Follow the road until the Hörnlebahn is directly in front of you.
