It doesn't always have to be the largest ski area to enjoy a perfect day's skiing. The Berwang ski arena, 15 kilometres west of the Zugspitze, has 36 kilometres of pistes and 13 lifts and, in addition to the classic downhill runs, offers a diverse range of winter sports options. Toboggan fans and cross-country skiers get their money's worth here, as do hikers and fans of curling. The Berwang ski resort is located directly on the Außerfernbahn, a cross-border railway line between Bavaria and Tyrol, which makes even the journey there an experience with fantastic views of the Wetterstein and Zugspitze massifs. To be on the safe side, you should carry an ID with you when crossing the border.
Family-friendly winter fun
With 20 kilometres of easy slopes (marked blue), the Berwang ski area is particularly suitable for families with children, novice skiers and leisure skiers. If you have never skied before or would like to brush up on your skills, you can book an introductory or advanced course at the local ski schools. Equipment can be hired from the local sports shops.
Whizz downhill on the natural toboggan run
In addition to skis and snowboards, the two specialist shops Nagele and Sport-Alm, which are located in the immediate vicinity of the railway station, also offer toboggan hire. This will take you down the free toboggan run, which is open daily from 8.30 am to 4.20 pm from the start of the season on 17 December until the beginning of April, depending on snow conditions. It is not only important for children to wear a helmet on the toboggan run, it is also compulsory. Helmets can also be hired from the sports shops. The starting point of the toboggan run can be reached either by a 30-minute walk along the cleared winter hiking trail from Berwang to the Jägerhaus or by a ride on the Egghof Sun Jet 6-seater chairlift.
Along the cross-country ski trail
For cross-country skiers, the Berwang ski arena also has several kilometres of groomed cross-country ski trails, both for classic cross-country skiing and skating. The approximately 39-kilometre-long network of trails around Bichlbach-Berwang can be accessed directly next to the "Bichlbach Almkopfbahn" and "Bichlbach-Berwang" stations. The Nagele sports shop, where you can hire cross-country skiing equipment, is located in the centre of Bichlbach just 300 metres from the train station. On your tour along the panoramic trail from Bichlbach towards Heiterwang am See, you can refuel at the Sunnawirt inn with Kässpatzn and Kaiserschmarrn to continue exploring the extensive network of trails. Most of the cross-country trails are interconnected and allow you to cover almost the entire 110-kilometre network of trails in the western Zugspitze region. All trails in the Berwang ski area are available to cross-country skiing fans free of charge.
Walking in a Winter Wonderland
The snow-covered winter landscape of Bichlbach-Berwang also provides the ideal backdrop for a winter walk on one of the numerous hiking trails. The destination of your hike could be one of the many rustic mountain huts, which tempt you with Tyrolean specialities in their warm parlours. To ensure that everyone can make good progress, all recommended winter hiking trails are cleared and gritted, making them suitable for families with children. Many of the paths can also be used with an all-terrain pushchair. Put on sturdy shoes and off you go!
Feast and enjoy the view
Winter sports make you hungry. If you want to take a little break from your active winter excursion and enjoy the view, the Heiterwanger Hochalm is a cosy spot at 1,620 metres. It is located between the two mountain stations of the Almkopfbahn and Sonnalmbahn cable cars and can therefore be reached by lift from both Bichlbach and Berwang. Tyrolean classics such as yeast and bacon dumplings, Kaiserschmarrn and Brettljausen are on the menu in the rustic alpine hut. The Hochalm is open in both the winter and summer seasons.
Berwang in summer
The Berwang-Bichlbach holiday region is also worth a visit in summer with its hundreds of kilometres of hiking and mountain climbing trails and its rustic alpine and mountain huts. In addition to hikers, the mountains here also attract mountain bikers with their adventurous single trails on their slopes. And if you want to go even wilder, you can also explore the skies with paragliding.
How to get there
