Once an excavation pit, now a bathing paradise: In summer, the local recreation area "Stoibermühle" just outside Freising is the ideal destination for families. A cosy lake with a shallow shore, lots of greenery all around and a beer garden with regional delicacies next door. It's hard to believe that excavators were digging and making noise here 30 years ago. Back then, gravel was excavated for the A92 motorway and the pit was then turned into a recreational area. There is no sign of the excavators today, and the faint sound of the nearby motorway can hardly be heard as you splash around happily.
The best way to discover the lake is on a bike tour from Freising. The highlight for families: the paths of the 15-kilometre circular tour are very safe and child-friendly, and there are many exciting corners to discover. It passes the Isar floodplains, for example, where you can refresh your feet. In the "Luitpoldanlage", a playground with a large slide tower beckons. And finally, discover one of the most impressive churches in Bavaria - Freising Cathedral - which will also amaze children.

St Mary's Cathedral Freising
It is considered a masterpiece of religious architecture: St Mary's Cathedral. As the landmark of Freising, it sits majestically on the summit of the Domberg. It is characterised by its two church towers, which can be seen from afar. There is evidence of a St Mary's Church on the Domberg as early as 700, which was elevated to the status of an episcopal church shortly afterwards.
The current building dates from the late 12th century. Its Romanesque portal and the large hall crypt with the famous Bestiary Column are particularly impressive testimonies to this era. During the Baroque period, the cathedral underwent numerous changes in which famous artists were involved. For example, Peter Paul Rubens created the mighty high altarpiece, which is now housed in Munich. In 1723/24, the brothers Cosmas Damian and Egid Quirin Asam decorated the cathedral with magnificent stucco and frescoes to celebrate the diocese's thousandth anniversary. In 1821, the seat of the bishopric was moved from Freising to Munich. Today, Freising Cathedral is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising. The cathedral is not a stand-alone building. To the east is the Gothic, later baroqueised cloister, which in turn is adjoined by the Benedictine church. The baroque hall of the cathedral library is located above the south wing of the cloister. On the north side of the cathedral courtyard, the Gothic St John's Church invites you to visit.
Visitors can gain a variety of insights into the history of the cathedral during guided tours organised by the cathedral church foundation. For classical music lovers, the annual organ concerts are among the cultural highlights.

Cycle back along Bahnhofstraße, turn left and keep straight on until you have crossed the Wörtermoosach and Moosach rivers. Now keep left and stay on Fürstendamm until you reach the railway subway on the right. Follow Parkstraße and then turn right onto Erdinger Straße to cross the Schleifenmosach and the Isar. On the other side of the Korbinian Bridge, you can take a detour to the Isar beach.
Back on Erdinger Straße, cycle to St Lantpert's Church and then turn left into Moosstraße. Then cycle through the subway under the B11 motorway and follow the road to Riegerau at the junction. Walk between fields up to the motorway bridge. At the end of the bridge, turn right and just before the bridge over the small stream, turn left into the car park for the bathing lake. Continue along the shore past the water guard house and the toilet block until a gravel path branches off to the left. Follow the path to the southern shore of the lake past the bird sanctuary.
The northern and eastern shores are best suited for children's swimming. The water is a little steeper on the western shore and swimming is not permitted on the southern shore.
Stoibermühle recreation area
The Stoibermühle local recreation area is located in the eastern part of Freising. Gravel was extracted here for the construction of the A92 motorway and the Stoibermühle bathing lake recreation area in Freising was designated after construction was completed. The almost 20-hectare area has been open since 1994. The lake is ideal for swimming, sunbathing, barbecuing and walking. On the southern shore there is a plant protection belt, otherwise you have access to the water all around. Sunbathing lawns have been laid out for sun-seekers. The shore of the lake slopes gently down to the water and therefore offers ideal conditions for children to splash around. Next door, the "Stoibermühle" beer garden attracts visitors in the summer months with Bavarian and Asian dishes.
Beach parties are sometimes organised at weekends.

For the way back, circle the lake to the western shore. From there, turn right and then immediately left again and cross the A92 motorway in the direction of Marzlinger Weiher. Pass the pond and continue straight ahead over the Isar.
After the Isar bridge, turn left and cycle along the riverbank for a while, where there are cosy beach areas where you can splash around. Before you reach the basketball court of the "Luitpoldanlage" green area, turn right and you will come directly to a spacious playground that offers plenty of variety for the little ones.
Playground in the Luitpoldanlage
In the playground, a large slide tower with a tube slide and a huge climbing element are waiting to be conquered. A neighbouring football pitch, a skate park and a BMX trail invite older children to let off steam. The playground is beautifully shaded and quietly located between Moosach, Luitpoldanlage and allotment gardens. There is plenty of space around it for a family picnic under the trees.
